Non-Stimulant medications are considered second line medications in ADHD management.

These are used if there are contraindications to the patient being prescribed stimulant medications such as an illicit drug history or cardiovascular problems. Clonidine is often used in combination with stimulants if insomnia is a problem.

Atomoxetine (Strattera) Formulations: 10-100mg capsules

  • used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children 6 years and older, adolescents and adults.

  • works by acting on brain chemicals called amines which are involved in controlling behaviour.

  • does not have a significant potential for abuse.

Guanfacine (INTUNIV) Formulations: 1-4mg tablets * Usually a PRIVATE SCRIPT (non PBS)

  • Guanfacine is a second-line ADHD medicine.

  • It is an alternative treatment for those with contraindications or intolerance to stimulant medicines.

  • It is also used as an adjunct to stimulant medications if insomnia or a sub-standard response is recorded.

  • INTUNIV does not have a significant potential for abuse.
